Vishishtadvaita Pre-Ramanujacharya
VISISTADVAITA BEFORE RAMANUJACHARYA (Abstract) – Swami Yogatmananda
The title VISISTADVAITA denotes (against the actual literal meaning) a philosophy about the relation between the soul and ultimate reality – the God or Brahman which is to be adored and loved as a distinct entity than oneself. This approach is quite natural and more conducive to devotion, rather than the approach known as Advaita or non-duality between the soul-world-God. Being quite obvious for our simple understanding and having automatic practical utility in worshipping the God as ‘distinct’ but ‘related’ entity, Vishishitadvaita attracts a lot of followers, although, the word itself is not so well-known.
The existence of the ‘world’ and of ‘I’ is a matter of experience for all. Each of us intuitively know that the two – ‘I’ and ‘world’ – constantly interact with each other. The conclusion of the of the third – the unseen power that creates and governs ‘I’ and ‘world’, is logically and scripturally derived. There are plenty of statements from scriptures like Upanisads (Shruti), Bhagavad Gita (Smriti) and Puranas which are open for this kind of understanding. The three – Shruti, Smriti & Purana are together called ‘PRASTHANATRAYA’ (three necessary things for the journey to God) and form the core of the Hindu scriptural expanse. The term Vedanta includes all the principal philosophical systems built on the basis of these three. The Vedanta schools have many apparently conflicting divisions, the main of these are Non-dualism (Advaita), Qualified Non-dualism (Vishishta-advaita), Dualism (Dvaita), Achintya-bheda-bheda (fundamental indeterminism about separate & non-separate), Shuddha Advaita (pure non-dualism, which considers the creation to be actually real).
Of these Vishishta Advaita is a school which was given an organized form by Ramanuja and is popularly associated with his name, existed much before his advent. The Alvars and Nayanars, who predated Ramanuja by many centuries, have propagated the same philosophy. Even Yamunacharya – a teacher of Ramanuja – held the same doctrine.
In the Vedanta Seminar, we will explore more about these teachers.
